AI EngineerZed is building a next-generation code editor, engineered from scratch in Rust for speed, elegance, and collaboration. We're expanding with AI capabilities and seeking talented AI engineers to join our new AI Foundations team!

👩‍💻 The Role: AI Foundations Engineer

As an AI Foundations Engineer, you'll optimize Zed's interaction with language models. This involves rapid prototyping, rigorous evaluation, and close collaboration with our team. You'll be at the forefront of exploring model capabilities and validating approaches before production implementation.

What You'll Do:

• 🎯 Design and implement AI systems interfacing with large language models.
• ✍️ Develop and refine prompts for optimal model interactions.
• ⚙️ Fine-tune models for coding-specific tasks.
• 🧪 Create robust evaluation frameworks to ensure reliable AI features.
• 🐍 Prototype AI-powered capabilities using Python and relevant AI frameworks.
• 🤝 Collaborate with the Rust team to translate prototypes into production features.
• 💡 Stay updated on AI research and identify new application opportunities.
• 🗺️ Lead the strategic vision for AI integration in Zed.
• 🤝 Participate in pair programming, collaborate with teammates, and engage in code reviews.

What We're Looking For:

• 🧠 Strong background in machine learning and natural language processing.
• 🤖 Extensive experience with large language models, including prompt engineering and fine-tuning.
• 🐍 Proficiency in Python and AI/ML frameworks.
• 🤖 Experience developing AI agents and working with agentic control flow frameworks.
• 🛠️ Ability to design and implement reliable, production-grade AI systems using rigorous, repeatable processes.
• 🚢 Track record of deploying AI in production environments.
• 💡 Ability to self-direct and lead strategic vision for AI initiatives.
• 🗣️ Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• ❤️ Passion for developer tools and improving the coding experience.
• 🦀 Willingness to learn Rust (as needed).
• 🤝 Enthusiasm for pair programming and real-time collaboration.

• 💻 Experience with AI-powered code analysis or generation.
