Optical Systems Engineer - Doctoral Student 👨‍🎓 - Onsite (Lisbon, Portugal) | B2-C1 English

About Infinera 💡 Infinera is seeking a talented intern with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics to join our Optical Architecture Group in Lisbon, Portugal. This role involves enrolling in a PhD program as part of the DN NESTOR Doctoral Network, funded by the European Commission and hosted at Infinera's Lisbon premises.

The Opportunity The evolution of optical networks is crucial to support demanding applications like 5G/6G, cloud services, and AI/ML. Coherent pluggable transceivers are a key innovation driving this evolution, allowing, for instance, the realization of an IP-over-DWDM network architecture.

This research and development work focuses on modeling and optimizing next-generation metro-aggregation networks using coherent pluggable transceivers.

Main Objectives 🎯

  • Investigating efficient and flexible node architectures to support both P2P and P2MP connections in metro networks.
  • Exploring accurate and fast performance estimation methods for the converged metro network scenario.
  • Developing an optimization framework for designing and operating converged metro networks using P2P- and P2MP-capable coherent pluggable transceivers.
  • Benchmarking the effectiveness of the proposed methods and conducting a techno-economic assessment of the proposed solution against existing solutions.

About the DN NESTOR Doctoral Network 🌐 The DN NESTOR Doctoral Network investigates and develops cost-effective solutions for deploying coherent optical transceivers in metro-access networks, crucial for supporting future demanding applications. The project's goals include research topics spanning digital signal processing to improved network design and operation techniques.

Collaboration and Partnership NESTOR comprises industry players and universities such as Infinera (Portugal), Coriant R&D GmbH (Germany), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Technical University of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Spain), and others.

What You'll Do 📝

  • Investigate existing and new optical node architectures for converged metro networks using P2P and P2MP coherent pluggable transceivers.
  • Develop network design and operation frameworks for converged metro networks, optimizing cost, power consumption, footprint, and scalability. Conduct detailed techno-economic comparisons.
  • Implement simplified models to estimate optical performance in converged metro networks using coherent pluggable transceivers and the selected node architectures. These models will help ensure the feasibility of the solutions.
  • Collaborate with other team members and external researchers.
  • Prepare and present internal and external reports and deliverables.
  • Write and present technical papers in journals and conferences from the IEEE and OPTICA.

What We're Looking For 🔎

  • Knowledge: Understanding of digital communications and telecommunications systems. Knowledge of relevant optical communication system subsystems (transceivers, modulators, amplifiers, switches) and familiarity with optical node architectures.
  • Experience: Experience with optimization models and algorithms (e.g., integer linear programming models, heuristic algorithms).
  • Skills: Knowledge of digital signal processing and optical transmission models. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Programming experience in Matlab, Python, Julia, or similar.
  • Education: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics.
  • Language: B2-C1 English Level.
  • Nice-to-Have: Highly attentive to detail, motivated, and possessing troubleshooting skills.
